The Guitars of Spain - Ida y Vuelta
    Sweet Pickle Music

    By: Ben Ohmart
    Aug 12, 2002

Artist: The Guitars of Spain (www.theguitarsofspain.com)
    Title: Ida y Vuelta
    Label: Sweet Pickle Music (www.sweetpicklemusic.com)
    Genre: Spanish guitar

'Ida y vuelta,' say the Guitars of Spain, 'is a term used by flamencos to describe those musical forms that have "returned" to Spain from the Caribbean and Latin America. In a broader sense, "ida y vuelta" is about our own personal journeys, both literal and spiritual. The music on this cd occurred because of exploration and a fascination with other cultures. It has been challenging and, at times, risky to leave our "comfort zones," but perhaps, the potential reward is a richer and more colorful palette."

Indeed it is. The 13 tracks of 54 minutes of Spanish guitar combined here take on just about every guise of Latin string you could want. From the traditional, hard strums and foot taps of 'Tangos de Malaga' to the beautiful instrumentals of 'Etude No. 1' and others, The Guitars of Spain have a knack for professionalism that clutches at jazz, blues and a host of other parts of the world.

    The players include

    Carlo Basile
    Doug Brush
    David Gonzalez
    Patty Ortega
    Wendy Clinard
    Tomas de Utrera
    Julie Goldberg
    Jennifer Trowbridge
    Melody Vasquez
    Joel Maisonet

They might not all perform on this release - since the picture within the cd booklet shows fewer people - but this is the list at the website. Speaking of which, if you need to hear before you buy, get onto www.mp3.com/lasguitarras/ and listen to all the tracks you can. Worth it, believe me.

The musicians collectively have more experience, awards and music degrees than you're ever likely to find in one place again. I won't bother quoting the plethora here, but just know that the singing, the dancing, and the strong guitars are all included, and worth the paltry price of $15 the label is asking.
