From the age of 3, Kasia Avila has been singing and dancing every chance she could get. Be it in the Tenant Association Christmas Party in her building, at her dance recital, in the local Chinese Restaurant, or on top of the picnic table at her cousin's place in Shirley, LI, she was already ready to put on a show.
She was born, Audrey Avila, in New York City and raised in the Bronx. Named after her mother's favorite actress, Audrey Hepburn; the performing bug was destined to steer her in the direction of entertainment.
With her mom hailing from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, and her dad from St. Croix, USVI, there was never a question that this young gal had rhythm in her blood. Growing up listening to El Gran Combo and Celia Cruz, along with Michael Jackson and Cool and The Gang, has definitely helped her develop a well-rounded appreciation for many types of music.
While in her teens, she also developed a love for the simpleness of country music, with the likes of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers periodically playing from her bedroom radio. "My favorite records to play at that age were the soundtracks to the movies 'Annie' and 'Grease'. I used to switch from one to the other on the old victroler, time and time again."
One of her most memorable moments was at the age of 9 when, after attending the midnight mass with her family on Christmas Eve, she sang two traditional songs at the piano of a Chinese Restaurant named The Green Dragon, located on Westchester Avenue in the Bronx. She was rewarded with praises from the patrons and the owner with a Chinese doll and back scratcher from behind the counter. From that moment on, she knew performing was her calling.
Now, as Kasia many years later, she is still performing and perfecting her craft. With the help of family and friends and the Lord up above, stay tuned and follow for more public and exciting things to happen. Be sure to drop her a note and let her know what your thoughts are, she's great at responding to her fan messages.
